We have a quote frequently used by us (Glow Tec, Inc.) on our website and on our products.
~~Creative play boosts brain power
But are these quotes true? Well, although we do like to consider ourselves scientists, however, in this blog entry you will find some information from actual doctors and researchers publishing their work in academic articles. So I hope you will please enjoy this blog to support our claims that PLAY really does BOOST YOUR BRAIN POWER!
It’s no secret that children learn from play, the positive impact which play has on children’s mental capacity and their brain development has piqued the curiosity of the scientific community. Recent studies have proven that play is essential to development and leads to smarter kids. The benefits of play which add to BRAIN POWER include things such as a more developed brain, connection changes (neurons) in the front end of the brain (prefrontal cortex) which wire-up a young brain to better regulate emotions, make plans and solve problems.
Although we know everyone is capable of learning, it is common knowledge that kids are quick to pick up on things and they are special because their brains are developing at an amazingly fast pace. In a child’s brain millions of neuro-pathways (brain connections) are developing and every child will be different, as estimated 10 billion neurons will have made connections by the time a child reaches age five. Each brain is unique which is why creative playful learning, the kind which is open-ended and unstructured, allows for individuals to flourish.
There is a strong link between using your hands and problem solving abilities (brain power). Doing mechanical work, or sculpting something like Glow Dough, building with blocks this is all the work of the hand in manipulation of objects-or as Dr. Stuart said “…the hand in search of the brain, the brain in search of the hand, and play is the medium by which those two are linked in the best way.” To hear him say this check out the link to his Ted Talk within in our resources list (below).
The data we’ve presented in this blog is the work of two super smart doctors by the names of Dr. Stephen Rushton and Dr. Stuart Brown (see our references below). We also drew from another blog of ours “Playing Pretend and Free Play” which is an article composed of supporting research from 8 well respected doctors and scientific researchers about the power of play which really does BOOST YOUR BRAIN POWER. But you don’t have to take our word for it, feel free to check out the citations at the bottom of the blogs to see where we got our information from and see for yourself.
